Clad in medieval armor, budding pop supernova and Rolling Stone cover star Chappell Roan stole the show at last night’s VMAs, triumphantly performing “Good Luck, Babe!” while a castle behind her burned. Prior to the show, she got into a verbal exchange with someone in the crowd of photographers as she walked the red carpet, but ended the night on a high note by nabbing the Best New Artist award. She dedicated her emotional speech “to queer and trans people that fuel pop.”

Chappell Roan’s rise may be meteoric, but that’s not to say she hasn’t been at this a long time; her first song was uploaded to YouTube in 2014 and she first signed with Atlantic in 2015. Her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess was released one year ago on Island Records. To celebrate the anniversary, the album is getting a new deluxe reissue on September 20, a year to the week of the initial release.

There are Target-exclusive and Urban Outfitters-exclusive versions of the album, which come in unique colorways, as well as a deluxe edition featuring a die-cut outer cover. The rereleases and retailer exclusives also ship on September 20 and can be pre-ordered now.

Chappell Roan toured with Olivia Rodrigo on her Guts Tour, opening for her through the winter and spring dates. The two reunited when Rodrigo brought Chappell Roan out to perform “Hot to Go!” They performed the track (and the dance) at the Intuit Dome in Los Angeles during Rodrigo’s penultimate show of the US leg of the Guts Tour in August.

Guts and The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess share a producer in Dan Nigro, who has also worked with Sky Ferreira, Conan Gray, and Caroline Polachek. Of their partnership, Chappell Roan said in a 2022 Rolling Stone interview, “I like it when people push me and tell me that my lyrics or the performance is not good enough. That’s not really the case for most co-writers out here that I’ve worked with. Until I met Dan.” Their first collaboration was 2018’s “Pink Pony Club,” which is featured on the full-length.
