Alyssa Farah Griffin, who previously worked for former President Donald Trump, revealed that she voted for Kamala Harris for president.
The “View” co-host shared her significant decision while discussing the 2024 presidential election on Tuesday’s episode.
“This weekend, on Saturday, for the first time in my life, I voted for a democrat,” she said while the audience and her co-hosts applauded. “I voted for Kamala Harris.”
Griffin, 35, clarified that she voted for Republicans elsewhere on the ballot but prioritized her “values” over her party.
“I consider my vote on loan to her,” Griffin explained. “I’m worried about the direction that Donald Trump will take this country, and I take my own warning seriously.”
Griffin said that she identifies as a “Christian,” an “American” and a “Republican” in “that order.”
“I need somebody who shares my values,” she reiterated. “I need somebody who is a kind and decent person who will bring this country together. I don’t agree with a lot of her policies, [and] we can criticize those down the road, but today, it’s about a brighter future, and I think the best thing for the country and the future of the republican party is Donald Trump loses and Kamala Harris is elected.”
The political strategist even recalled how different her views were four years ago when she was with Trump on election night in 2020 when “it became increasingly clear that he was going to lose.”
“I thought the next four years would be the republican party rebuilding and becoming something I could believe in and turning the page on Donald Trump, and it didn’t,” she said for her rationale.
Griffin rounded out her announcement by expressing a sentiment Harris has repeated that “resonated” with her.
“I believe there’s more that unites this country than divides us,” Griffin said. “Our politicians may make us feel otherwise, campaign cycles may make us feel otherwise, but I believe we have common shared American values, and regardless of the outcome, we are still going to be a great nation, and I believe the right people are going to come together.”
Griffin received praise from her fellow co-hosts for her decision, with Sunny Hostin cheering, “Good girl! Way to go Alyssa!”
Sara Haines applauded Griffin’s “big move,” while also acknowledging the hate she may get for her swap.
“I think of it less as you voting for a democrat and more for you voting for a democracy, for a constitution, so I commend you for that,” Haines said. “I also know though, standing up for something has a cost, so she will get torn apart, but you did the right thing, and I commend you for that.”
Prior to starting her career as a co-host on “The View” and a political commentator on CNN, Griffin served as press secretary for Trump’s former Vice President Mike Pence and special assistant to Trump from 2017 to 2019.
Griffin made history as becoming the youngest press secretary for the Pentagon in 2019 before serving as deputy assistant to the secretary of defense for public affairs and press secretary for the Department of Defense from 2019 to 2020.
However, she resigned as the White House communications director in December 2020 and was later vocal about condemning Trump for allegedly inciting the attack against the US Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
Griffin has joined a slew of celebrities both encouraging people to vote and also publicly supporting a political candidate.
Stars who have endorsed Harris includes Taylor Swift, Jennifer Lopez, Beyoncé, Dick Van Dyke, Stevie Nicks and former Republican politician and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, among others.
Meanwhile, Elon Musk, Joe Rogan, Jake Paul, Patrick Mahomes’ mom, Hulk Hogan and Amber Rose are among those celebrities who have voted for Trump.
